As the days grow colder and porch sitting gives way to blankets, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts invites teaching artists and older adults to get creative online.
On Monday, the PCA launched the Academy for Creative Aging, a free online platform that offers on-demand video lessons for seniors and a certificate of completion for artists who teach.
The Academy’s on-demand lessons provide individuals and groups with access to APC’s video catalog, which includes lessons in still life portraiture and classical Indian dance.
Seniors who engage in creative pursuits are, on average, less lonely and isolated than their peers, and the academy aims to address feelings of social isolation in the state’s aging population through its collection of entertaining and informative art lessons.
“For years we have used the arts as a way to engage older people socially and recreationally, knowing that we are fighting social isolation, teaching lifelong learners new ways to self-expression and intentionally expand our evidence-based practices to improve health outcomes for these individuals. we serve,” Jason Kavulich, director of the Lackawanna County Area Agency on Aging, said in a press release.
“This platform not only provides all of us with a cohesive catalog of diverse and exciting online programs, but it also gives us the tools to train and support our local professional artists working with regional agencies on aging to design programs evidence-based to offer. to the communities we serve.
Artists who teach older adults can earn degrees and deepen their understanding of arts education for aging populations through the academy’s free professional development track.
The Professional Development track is a module-based certification course that allows teaching artists to earn degrees while learning what their older students want and need in creative environments.
The program was developed by APC, guided by industry experts and rooted in research. The career path of the academy is self-guided.
The Creative Aging Academy connects artists and seniors to the resources needed for better intergenerational connection and more fulfilled lives.
