| Crusaders Indoor Club Records
Inaugurated
January 11th 2003
As the indoor season gets underway, Crusaders AC
is inaugurating its men's indoor Club Records. Although indoor
athletics has only been a serious feature of the Irish domestic
scene for around a decade now, Crusaders athletes have a long and
successful history 'on the boards' both at home and abroad. Ronnie
Delany broke the Indoor World Record for the mile no less than three
times in the late fifties, and his mark of 4:01.4 still stands as
the Club Record today. He also set a European Indoor Record of
3:51.0 for the 1500m in 1957; who knows what times he may have run
had his career enjoyed the longevity of the modern era. Two of the
Club Records are also Irish National Records; Paul Quirke's shot
putt of 18.07m, and Peter Coghlan's 7.57s for the 60m hurdles. One
of the more remarkable feats on the books is Niall Dunne's 800m
record of 1:49.08 - this was recorded in 1998 when he was just
pipped on the line by the legendary Johnny Gray in only his fifth
ever race at 800m! The women's indoor records will hopefully be
released shortly.
