A good start to the year for Crusaders resulted in a number of wins and a large medal haul from both sides of the Atlantic. Killian Barry in his first American collegiate competition for Texas Tech, won the weight throw in a new PB of 16.77m at the Texas Tech Open.

Colin Quirke carried on 2012 as he left off 2011 with another win in the shot to add to his win in the opening event of his indoor season, Manhattan College Opener on the 1st December. He followed that win up with another in the Brother Jasper Invitational on 10th December with a throw of 17.68m to break his national under 23 record by 12cm in his final throw of the competition.

After a month away from competition Colin showed he could keep to good form with another win in the NYC Gotham Cup in the New Balance Armory on 13th January. His throw of 16.32 qualifies him for both the Metropolitan and ECAC/IC4A Championships.

At the National Masters championships in Nenagh on Sunday the 15th January, the medal haul continued. Graham Flynn ran 7.99 in the 60m heats to qualify for the V35 final as fastest loser and ran 8.02 in the final which was 7th overall behind former International sprinter, Kevin Cogley who won in 7.23secs (New Irish record). Paul Francis, took a break from coaching to pick up a bronze medal in the V3 200m. While in the over 55 age group Liam Lyster won the 60m, placed 3rd in the 200m and picked up another gold in the shot.
Crusaders athlete of the championship was former world veteran champion and hardest working man in Crusaders, Jim O’Neill in the V8 category. Not only did he win all of his races he entered; 800m, 400m and 200m but he also got the Irish records in all 3 of them, to add to the many national records and international titles he has amassed in his stellar career with Crusaders.
