Strong Crusaders performances at Prince Willie’s and Powerscourt
Jason and Richie chasing Irish Champion Brian Furey
Two more rounds of the Leinster League as well as one Leinster Championship race took place over the last fortnight in the Wicklow hills and the increased breadth of the hill-running squad really showed in all events.
In the very long and challenging Circuit of Avonbeg, Roisin McDonnell won the women’s race and Kevin O’Riordan used his orienteering skills to good effect to finish 9th. Diarmud O’Colmain won the M60 category and Ken Cowley also completed the gruelling open mountain stint.
In the Leinster League, our women continued their long spell at the top of the league table, following up their opening wins at Howth and Bray with second behind Sli Cualann at Prince William’s Seat before being back to winning ways at Powerscourt where Aoife Joyce finished third in what was the most competitive women’s field of the season yet. The course doubles up at the European Trial, so this was a great opportunity for a lot of our aspiring internationals to test their form ahead of that.
Richie Healy opened his mountain running season in style, on top of his personal best 5 miler this Sunday, with a 4th placed finish and took second in the team competition together with Jason Kehoe (7th) and brother Jonathan (18th). Amidou Dembele just failed to make the top-20 but had another good run and there was plenty more Crusaders men acquitting themselves well. Amidou and Jonathan, both using their fast descents, had led our team home in 11th and 12th and secured victory at Prince William’s the week before together with Oran Murphy.
The latest results mean the men have now also gone top of the league although Rathfarnham look favourites for the title once they get all their five best results up.
