G.V. Ryan/Louis Vandendreis/ Irish Miler Club Irishtown Meet
Shane Fitzsimon of Mullingar Harriers
A great night was had by all down at the G.V. Ryan/Louis Vandendreis / Irish Miler Club meet in Irishtown Stadium.
There was a great turn out for first Noel Carroll 800 metres race. Noel was one of Ireland’s great Irish middle distance runners who set European and World Records in the1960s and Sports Illustrated once described Carroll as “one of the best middle-distance runners in the world”.
In a fitting hounour of Noel’s great legacy that this race has now established itself as one of the fastest 800 metres races in Ireland and on the night was won by Anthony Lieghio of Tallaght AC in a time of 1.50.14.
Some other great highlights on the night was Mairead Murphy in the 100m hurdles getting the qualifying time for European U23’s along with Shane Shane Fitzsimon of Mullingar Harriers who ran the qualifying time for the 2011 World Youth Championships in the 1500m which are to be held in Lille Métropole, France on the 6–10 July.
