Fast times for track athletes
Steven Colvert in action in the IUAA championship 2011
With the mountain runners in action in Munster and Connaught, track athletics provide the action in the other two provinces. At the Irish University Track and Field Champions in Antrim, Steven Colvert and Eoin Mulhall were in action. In the 100m, Steven Colvert, running as a guest posted the fastest time by an Irish man this year, running 10.62 and came back the next day to post 10.80 for 2nd in unfavourable wind conditions. In the 200m he ran 21.39 into a head wind to place him 2nd in the race and on the Irish list for the year. Eoin Mulhall got his season off to a mixed start, while running the fastest time of the championship, 49.49 in very unfavourable wind conditions, but was unlucky to get disqualified for stepping out of his lane. However, the time shows he has wintered well and is coming into good form.
IUAA track and Field Champions results
Closer to home, in the first home match of the Dublin Grade series and large amount of Crusaders athletes were in action. In the women’s Discus, Crusaders athletes made up more than half of the field with Alex Hughes coming out on top, with Karen Conway in second and Margaret O’Hogartaigh who was 3rd in the shot also in the field. Other Crusaders athletes to finish in the top three in the throws, were Eoin Moylan and Sam Gaine. Both showing good form as they prepare for the Leinster Schools Championships. On the track, Stephen Moore in his first track race finished 2nd in his race in 4.42. While Kevin Woods, another athlete building up for the Leinster Schools, showed good speed setting a new PB of 25.47. Graham Flynn finished 2nd in his race in 26.23 with Liam Lyster three places behind in 29.15.
