Torben Dahl added a fourth 2:5x marathon performance to the roster he has racked up in the last 3 months (the previous being Dublin, Polar Circle and Clonakilty), this time taking on the warm streets of Marrakech in Morroco for the 23rd International Marathon of Marrakech. Torben finished 60th out of 559 entrants in a time of 2:53:24.

Richie conquers Hell, hill running round-up

Richie Healy beat off 1200 other rough-running enthusiasts to take victory on the 10k “Hell and Back” race course in Kilruddery Estate yesterday. Kevin English, Donore Harriers, looked set to win by Richie stayed strong throughout on a course that counted innumerable obstacles and took full advantage of his strong finish. This was a great way to start the season for Richie whose work commitments kept his racing limited in 2011.

Crusaders in action at Raheny 5 mile

We had another good year of representation at the Raheny 5 mile race yesterday. As usual a large and very competitive field turned out on a day that saw a lot of racing around the country with the Dungarvan 10 mile also a big pull for masses further south. Ciaran Devaney let home the Cru in a good sub-30 time of 28:30. Philip Matthews was next in 30:18. There seemed to be a good share of PBs as well with at least bests confirmed for James Cottle and Deirdre Ni Chearbhaill.

Record breaking Cru bring medals home

The opening to the indoor season for Crusaders not only resulted in a large medal haul but four national age group records including an U23 record for Colin Quirke and multiple records for Jim O’Neill.

Da Cru in action over the Christmas break

The women’s captain finished off one of the best years for the Crusaders women’s team by finishing 3rd Senior women in one of the most competitive female road race of the Irish calendar.

Good runs at the Clonliffe 5k Christmas Cracker

Three Crusaders were in action for the birth of the Clonliffe 5k Christmas Cracker and set off in the perfect atmosphere offered by Morton Stadium in Santry. Two of our Dublin Intermediate bronze medallists came home first: Jason Kehoe in 16:13 (new PB) followed by Liam Morris in 16:55. Third was the indefatiguable James Cottle in 19:33.

National Novice

Both male and female teams competed for the club in one of the biggest cross-country gatherings in the country at The Curragh, Co. Kildare. The looped course only had minor hills but a few very muddy patches to ensure some old-school cross-country atmosphere. Aoife Joyce was first Crusader home in the ladies race (38th) and literally one second meant one position among the 151 finishers. The women’s team was 11th out of 16th. In the men’s race…

Torben Dahl third at Clonakilty, new PB for James Cottle

Crusading marathon enthusiast Torben Dahl had a lot to celebrate in the Clonakilty Waterfront marathon race on December 10th. After finishing well in Dublin and winning the Polar Circle marathon, Torben has not been resting on his laurels and took 3rd place in a new personal best of 2:50:56 just about 2 minutes ahead of the next podium chaser.

Great Cru turn-out at Jingle Bells 5k

Amidou Dembele lead home a sizeable contingent of Crusaders in the traditional Jingle Bells 5k taking 39th and lowered his PB from 17:45 to 17:09. Richard Healy and Kieran O’Loughlin came in next in 50th and 58th respectively in a field of just under a thousand runners. Martina White was our only ladies representative on the day. The new course was described as “very fast” but the windy conditions meant regular drafting was essential to run to full potential.

Medal haul increases at the Dublin Intermediates

At the Dublin Intermediate cross country championships Crusaders continue the seasonal medal haul with the men’s team adding bronze and Sam Mealy cruising away from the field for his biggest win to date.

Junior Cru wins Dublin Cross Country Championships

Early signs of the Junior Cru’s entry into the world of cross country resulted in the second team win for Crusaders in the space of as many weeks.

Jason wins Camlough 10k

Jason Kehoe recorded his third win of the year, and could celebrate a strong dress rehearsal ahead of the longer cross-country races coming up in the Leinster and Dublin Intermediates, with his first-place finish at the Camlough 10k in County Down. Afterwards he described the race as “very hilly, up the side of a mountain practically”. As winner of Carrauntoohil, he should know, yet it did not seem to have mattered much as he finished in 35:19 (new PB) almost two minutes clear of runner-up Killian Heery, Bailieborgh AC.

Dublin City Marathon results

Congratulations to the many Crusaders who turned out for yesterday’s Dublin City Marathon, there were many personal bests set despite the wind and drizzle and at least as many Crusaders lined the streets to support. Well done everybody and enjoy a deserved rest before you again start to think about the next race.

First male Crusader was Rob Cross in 2:50:10 with Aoife Quigley first lady in 3:26:05. Special mention needs to go to Torben Dahl who recorded a new PB only eleven days after winning the polar Circle Marathon. Perhaps the cold conditions aided recovery, we must investigate that further. In addition, long standing member Alan O’Keefe became the latest addition to the sub-3 hour club.

Ladies show the way at Leinster Novice

The scene was set for a perfect day of cross-country on the challenging and scenic course at Belvedere House in Mullingar for the Leinster Novice cross-country yesterday. Ahead of our marathon participants, seven ladies and four men represented the club. The ladies race had been lengthened to four kilometres in error but this proved no hindrance to our girls: Catherine Thornton secured her first cross-country medal by taking an emphatic bronze medal after having sat on the two leaders early on. Aoife Joyce followed strongly moving from 11th to 4th on the last lap and with two more women in the top-20 and the whole squad packing well, the team could call themselves Leinster Novice champions 2011!

Torben Dahl wins Polar Circle Marathon

New Crusader Torben Dahl put in another impressive win this autumn when he recorded a time of 3:02:57 Polar Circle marathon on Greenland with almost five minutes to spare on the next contender. To appreciate the time consider the conditions of the race dubbing itself “the coolest marathon on Earth”: the route has some stretches of good dirt road but contestants have to face ice, snow and undulating terrain so Torben’s experience from the IMRA races no doubt proved a great help.

Success for Crusaders in Donedea 10k

Oran Murphy and Aoife Joyce both represented Crusaders AC at the second running of the Donadea 10k in Co. Kildare. It proved a great day for Aoife who secured second place in the ladies category behind Pauline Curley in a time of 40:31 (PB). Oran Murphy also ran well to finish 15th overall.

Notice is hereby given the Crusaders Athletic Club AGM will be held on Tuesday 25th October 2011 at
8pm in Irishtown Stadium. Nominations for members of the committee and Resolutions should be sent

Crusaders turn out in force at Dublin Novice

The club had its best turn-out yet for the Dublin Novice Cross-Country race in Phoenix Park yesterday with fifteen men and six ladies donning the white and red shirt. Our ladies were first in action and Catherine Thornton led the team home in 8th with the remaining team packing very close together in the spots 23rd to 29th.  Jason Kehoe outsprinted two Sportsworld runners to arrive first man in 12th position followed by Stephen Moore and Amidou Dembele who arrived with two seconds between them in 18th and 20th. Amidou took out four runners in the straight but was disappointed to miss a fifth.

Crusaders kick-off cross-country season in Stamullen

The Crusaders men opened their cross-country season at the 23rd annual Star of the Seas Cross-Country Festival in Co. Meath this sunday. The course consists of four 1500m laps with two long extended climbs. Wet and windy conditions and uneven grass ensured that both experienced XC runners René Borg and Jason Kehoe and debutante Amidou Dembele got plenty of practice in ahead of next week’s faster Dublin Novice course. The team equited themselves well taking third place ahead of Raheny Shamrocks. The two teams were tied on points but when René arrived in 38th and Raheny’s third scorer in 58th, we sealed the win on the “first across the line” tie-breaker.

Another great half-marathon weekend for the Cru

Crusaders athletes were in action both in the Dublin and Kilkenny Half-Marathons and the highlights included individual victory for newly joined Crusaders Torben Dahl, and a 16. placed finish and seven minute PB for Rob Cross in Dublin. Torben, the third Dane to run for Crusaders in recent years (it must be the colours), battled Irish international duathlete Keith Heary for most of the race and needed a 77-minute run for the win (a five minute PB).
Our ladies also did themselves proud with Aoife Quigley thirteenth woman overall in 91:16 and Deirdre ni Chearbhaill recording 93:23.

Solid performances at National Half-Marathon

Crusaders had four men representing the club in the annual National Half-Marathon championship in Waterford which attracted a huge crowd of almost seven hundred athletes and sixty-three teams scattered across the senior and masters categories. A course change meant one of the fastest half-marathon routes in the country and weather conditions with sixteen degrees and light drizzle setup the race perfectly for fast times with a finish in the RSC stadium providing excitement to the line.

Jason Kehoe wins Donard, Kevin O’Riordan takes on Wicklow Round

The final race of the Irish Championship had been integrated into the Slieve Donard-Commedagh race run by the Northern Irish Mountain Running Association. This created the rather interesting situation that Jason Kehoe finished both fourth and first in the same race. He finished fourth in the overall classification but first among the runners who have competed in the Irish Championship. The result confirmed his second place in the championship, one point adrift of Rathfarnham’s Brian Furey.

New Masters World Record for Crusaders Phil Conway

Congratulations tothe great Phil Conway (Crusaders Throws Coach)  who stole the show down at the Woodie’s DIY Masters championships at Tullamore Harriers stadium by winning the V6 shot with a throw of 12.60m which is a new World age group record

A weekend of many National Golds and Silvers

Congratulations to all the Crusaders who took part in the Woodie’s DIY Track & Field Championships of Ireland. In what was a weekend full of Gold’s and many Silver’s starting off with an excellent display of hammer throwing with the young talent of Conor McCullough winning the Hammer with a pb throw of 72.67m and then he went on to win Silver in the Discus with a throw of 48.68m

Amidou in top-10 at inaugural Bay 10k

In a time where there is precious few 10k courses to select from on the calendar, the “Park West 10k” at the Grand Canal and “The Bay 10k” in Dun Laoghaire are welcome additions to the fixture list. For the Bay 10k, the reviews we got implied that the course was neither slow nor fast, but somewhere in between, and this suited Crusader Amidou Dembele who knocked over three minutes off his 10k PB to finish ninth in 36:31.

Jason Kehoe second in Irish Championship

Jason Kehoe has had an enthralling rivalry with Rathfarnham’s Brian Furey in the battles over Ireland’s highest peaks and roughest mountain-side for the title of IMRA Irish Champion this season. While he managed to draw the longest straw in the uphill competition, King of the Mountains, and had a memorable win at Carrauntoohil, his hopes for the Irish Championships were ended when he finished second to Brian on the penultimate race at Galtymore this weekend.

Crusaders in action on British hills

Aoife Joyce ran well in her international outing at the 36th Snowdon Race to record a new personal best for the 10 mile mountain race of 95:47 and finished 17th woman overall and was the second finisher home for the Irish ladies squad.  English marathon international Andi Jones took his fifth win in six years in a festival of mountain running which was dominated by the Scottish teams.

Killian Barry leads the way in the European juniors

Killian Barry maintains his place at the head of the Irish hammer renaissance as he finishes highest Irish thrower in the European junior championships in Tallinn, Estonian.

Covert finishes 6th in Europe

Steven Colvert finishes 6th in the European U23 championships after Moving to 4th on the Irish All time list in the semis.

Strawberry Half Marathon

A small number of Crusaders made the short journey down to Enniscorthy for the Strawberry Half Marathon on 26th June.  This race, which is organised by former Crusaders’ Jane and Graham Porter, is a highlight on the road racing calendar.  The Porters’ experience and enthusiasm for organising races shines through as did the sun, on one of the warmest days of the year so far.

Best of luck to Steven and Colin in the European U23’s

Best of luck to Steven Colvert (200m) and Colin Quirke (Discus) who both will be competing in the European U23 Track and Field Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic from the 14th-17th July

Fastest 400m time by an Irish athlete this season

Congratulations to Brian Murphy who posted a huge personal best of 46.41 finishing second in the 400m Brussels Grand Prix on Sunday. This time is the fastest by an Irish athlete this season and Brians previous best was 46.89 in 2010.

400m Brussels Grand Prix Results:

Sam Mealy wins Kilmore 5k

Junior Sam Mealy has been showing good form since returning from his sojourn in the states temporarily culminating in a good victory in the Kilmore 5k in Wexford this Saturday past. The course consisted of five laps around Kilmore, racers afterwards reckoned the course would be around 20-25 seconds slow due to the two sharp climbs on each lap.

Aoife and Amidou shine at Mt. Leinster

Crusaders runners were very active in Co. Wexford this weekend: Following on Sam Mealy’s win in the Kilmore 5k the previous day, Aoife Joyce took her second victory in five days winning the Mt. Leinster championship race ahead of Rathfarnham’s Zoe Melling.

In doing so, she became the second record-breaker of the day: Overall winner Tom Hogan, Racing795, had set a new men’s record on the slightly lengthened course and Aoife followed that up by knocking a minute of her own record set in 2008 confirming showing further proof that her form is coming together well for Snowdon.

Graded Meet 6 - Roundup

Six Crusaders athletes were in action at the Graded Meet at Santry this Wednesday: Gareth Dunne, Patrick Saunders, and John Keegan all contested the 400m with Gareth winning the B grade in 52.15 with John third eighty-three hundreds back. Patrick finished third in the C grade in 54.34.

The 1500m saw the welcome return of Sam Mealy, back from his stint in the States, who recorded a timeof 4:07.45 to finish eigth in the A grade. Club captain Gary Park hauled home ninth in the B grade with his run in 4:20.43.

Jason Kehoe had stepped off the mountains for a stint to get his track debut. Perhaps his exploits on the slopes of Lugnacoille the previous Sunday still sat in his legs for it turned into a baptism of fire with Jason 15th in the 3000m where all grades had been amalgamated. Yet this being his first 3k race, the time of 10.19 stands as a new PB for the newly crowned King of the Mountains who’ll look to lower that performance by a good bit once his legs acclimatise to the flat.

Aoife Joyce wins Trooperstown Hill

Aoife Joyce had a good opportunity to polish off her form ahead of her international involvement at Snowdon at the Leinster League race at Trooperstown this Wednesday. She held off an early challenge from Clare Sullivan and Sonja Fuhrmann before building a commanding lead on open mountain winning in 48:25 with Sullivan second (51:33) and Fuhrmann third (52:04). Susan Seager’s finished 8th and Eva Fairmaner 12th allowing the ladies’ team to pick up their eighth win in nine outings.

Aoife Joyce selected for Irish Snowdon team

An Irish development team has once again been selected to go to the Snowdon International Mountain race on 23rd of July by IMRA high performance officer Pat Ryan. Crusaders mountain running coach Rene Borg has been selected as the team manager and will travel with the team. The team was selected based on performances in the European Trial race a few weeks back and Aoife Joyce has been selected for the ladies team after her 4th place finish. Lucy Darcy, Sportsworld, and Emma Donlon who finished 5th and 6th in the trial make up the team.

Crusaders rise to the task at Lugnacoille

Plenty of highlights for the club at the third of five Irish Championship races at Leinster’s highest peak Lugnacoille this weekend. Jason Kehoe had to defend a twelve second lead in the King of the Mountains competition over Brian Furey and duly rose to the occasion with a combative performance. Aoife Joyce set a new PB on the course as she finished 2nd behind Northern Ireland’s Diane Wilson while Amidou Dembele produced a breakthrough performance on the descent.

Killian Barry set national record in epic national championships.

In the best Irish junior hammer field ever assembled Killian Barry took the lead on his last throw with a new national junior record.

G.V. Ryan/Louis Vandendreis/ Irish Miler Club Irishtown Meet

A great night was had by all down at the G.V. Ryan/Louis Vandendreis / Irish Miler Club meet in Irishtown Stadium.
There was a great turn out for first Noel Carroll 800 metres race. Noel was one of Ireland’s great Irish middle distance runners who set European and World Records in the1960s and Sports Illustrated once described Carroll as “one of the best middle-distance runners in the world”.
In a fitting hounour of Noel’s great legacy that this race has now established itself as one of the fastest 800 metres races in Ireland and on the night was won by Anthony Lieghio of Tallaght AC in a time of 1.50.14.

Aoife Joyce fourth at Euro Trial as men take silver medals

Aoife Joyce confirmed her resurgence in form since her return form injury with a commanding climb at the European Trial on Djouce Mountain this weekend. To add a “silver lining” Richard Healy (10th), Amidou Dembele (15th) and Jonathan Healy (16th) combined to take the runner-up medals behind Rathfarnham in the Irish Club Championship attached to the event.

Results and photos online for the Bloomsday Beach Run

Crusaders would like to thank all those that ran in and volunteered at the first Bloomsday Beach Run.  Results and Photos are online for the Bloomsday Beach Run.

Crusaders take silver medals at Wicklow Way Relay

A great start to the mountain running season got better when the Crusaders team recorded their highest ever finish in the annual Wicklow Way Relay taking the silver medals behind a rampant Rathfarnham side who lowered the existing record for the 127km traverse to 7hrs3min13secs. Even with a club record finishing time of 7 hours 36 minutes and 13 seconds, the team car endured some nervous moments securing the more precious metal by only nine seconds to Boards AC.

Crusaders at Dublin Graded Meet 4

Lots of Crusaders in action at the 4th Graded Meet on home-turf at Irishtown where our 100m men in particular had several podiums finishes in different starts and our shot-putters took possession of the entire podium in their event! Of our long distance runners, Rob Cross finished sixth in the 800m B race and Amidou Dembele had a promising start to his track career when the mountain runner ran 10:11 for this first 3000m.

Jason Kehoe takes spectacular victory on Carrauntoohil

The 25th anniversary of the Irish Championship race up Ireland’s highest mountain will be long remembered. A strong field took the line with Rathfarnham’s Brian Furey and Barry Minnock as the favourites. Our men’s mountain running team has been steadily improving over the last few years with many good highlights but none will stand out as clearly in memory, or rank as highly, as today’s performance by Jason Kehoe.

European U23 standard for Steven Colvert

Congratulations to Steven Colvert who was in action in Dessau Germany and he won the U23 100m in 10.58, and was second in the 200m in a time of 21.02which is inside the standard of 21.25 for the European U23 championships in Ostrava next month.

Fast 400m for Brian Murphy and Eoin Mulhall in Switzerland, while Colin Quirke qualifies for US College Championship final

Alan O’Brien takes the spoils in Donore Summer 5k

After winning the Curragh 10k two weeks ago Alan was in winning form again in his second race back after injury , he came home in a superb time of 15:18 despite strong head-strong winds.
Alan also won the Dash for Cash at the 3k fending off Vinny Mulvey from Raheny AC.

Aoife Joyce wins revived Glasnamullan race

Aoife Joyce won her first Leinster League race since returning from injury as the IMRA Leinster League continued on the new Glasnamullan course which takes runner’s up Djouce mountain from an entirely new direction. Aoife led from the early stages of the race and by the end of the race she was almost four minutes clear of the next lady.

Killian Barry set new National Junior Record in the Hammer

Killian Barry set a new National Junior record in the hammer of 66.43m.  While Brain Murphy goes to the head of the Irish rankings over 400m.

Sportsworld 5 Mile

Close battle between Crusaders at the tough Sportsworld 5 Miler with plenty of challenge from the late hill and headwind. Jason Kehoe and Richie Healy…

Strong Crusaders performances at Prince Willie’s and Powerscourt

Two more rounds of the Leinster League as well as one Leinster Championship race took place over the last fortnight in the Wicklow hills and the increased breadth of the hill-running squad really showed in all events and puts Crusaders top of the team’s league table after four of thirteen races.

Colvert gets sprint double in AAI games while Quirke extends his national rankings lead.

A double win for Steven Colvert, as Crusaders sprints dominate the AAI Games in very windy conditions.  Elsewhere Quirke finished 4th and 5th in the Discus and Shot, respectively in the IC4A Championships.

Crusaders at Wicklow Fit4Life

Rene Borg and Niamh O’Ceallaigh were in action during the latest round of the Wicklow Fit4Life championships. The courses make great low-key racing venues and the customary hilly courses in strong winds prevailed once again on the 5k in Wicklow Town.

European U23 qualification for Colin Quirke

Colin Quirke competing for Manhatten College in the MAAC conference championship moved to the head of the Irish rankings in the Shot and Discus, achieving the European U23 qualifing mark in the later.

2011 Great Ireland Junior Run Club Results

Some of our young athletes competed in the Great Ireland Junior Run on 10th April and had some great results.
Kevin Woods (U16) finished in 6th place with a time of 10.06, 23 seconds off his last years time.
James Woods (U14)  finished in 33rd place with a time of 11.38. He knocked 3min and 57 seconds off his time for last year.  Fantastic improvement.
One of youngest juveniles Oisin McGinley (U10) did it in 13 and a bit.
Over 1000 registered for the junior run and 800 ran on the very hot, but beautiful, day. So that was brilliant running by our juvenile athlets and very well done.

Crusader athletes in action over cross country

While Rob Cross and Jason Kehoe braved the recent weather conditions in the traditionally tough BHAA race in North County Dublin, Sam Mealy displayed good cross country form in milder conditions of Northern California.

Dublin Intermediates Cross-Country 2010

At the Dublin Intermediates on Sunday in Tymon park, Crusaders had their most successful cross country outing in quite soon time with both men’s and women’s team coming home with medals.  In much improved conditions from the previous year, sixteen of the Cru took part over soft but relatively dry parkland of South Dublin.

How to improve your running

For anyone interested, next Tuesday Michael McGovern (Head Coach Crusaders) is giving a talk on ‘How to improve your running’. Some do’s and as importantly don’ts will be unveiled and some secrets for running success.

Dublin City Marathon

There were perfect racing conditions, record crowds and some terrific results by Crusaders at the 31st Dublin Marathon on the Bank Holiday Monday.  Gar Coughlan lead the Cru home finishing 57th overall in an impressive time of 2.38. 53.

Leinster Novices

Mullingar hosted the Leinster Novices Cross-Country on Sunday the 24th of October. On a very tough course in the scenic Belvedere estate, our women once again acquitted themselves well.

BHAA Teachers Cross Country

The BHAA kicked off their Winter League last Saturday in glorious sunshine and dry conditions not the type of cross country conditions we are used to. There was a good number of Crusaders racing. The men’s race was over 4 miles whilst the ladies was a 2 mile race.

Team Silver for women and individual bronze for Aoife Joyce

The Crusaders Novice teams put in a fine performance in the Dublin Novice Championships under blue sky of the Phoenix Park to start of the cross country season.  While the blue skies may not continue, the improvement of the cross country scene within the club looks set to build on the advancements made over the last few years.

Rathfarnham 5k

There were perfect racing conditions in Rathfarnham calm and sunny for the annual Rathfarnham WSAF 5km on Sunday 26th September. There was good crowd from Crusaders racing and there were some great runs and PBs on this fast course.

Chamney wins European Team Championship in Hungary

Thomas Chamney produced a commanding performance on Sunday last to claim victory for Ireland at the European Team Championships 1st League in Budapest, Hungary. Racing over 800m, he was one of just 3 individual winners as Ireland maintained 1st league status having been promoted to this level of competition just last year.

Crusaders/IMC Grand Prix

A sunny, cold and blustery evening was the setting for the first of what will be elite type Grand Prix Track and Field meets in Ireland. Organised jointly by Crusaders and the Irish Milers club this meet attracted Irelands best sprinters, middle distance and pole vaulters.

National Road Relays

There were two firsts for Crusaders at the National Road Relays in Raheny on Sunday 11th April. The club had a team entered in the Senior Women’s race for the first time. Valerie Fenton, Tressan McCambridge and Mary Coghlan did the club proud by stepping up to the plate at an event that is fiercely competitive. Hopefully this will establish the event as a fixture on the calendar for our women athletes.

Crusaders in Africa

Last spring, Crusaders’ Markus Roessel and Uli Fluhme (ex-Crusader, now based in NYC) decided to travel to Iten in Kenya where many of the top Kenyan runners live and train. We were fascinated by the fact that a small village hosts a majority of the world’s fastest runners. At the same time, we started the website www.mzungo.org to raise the profile of Kenyan and other distance runners.
