Crusaders Host AAI Games

Come Sunday 21st the best of the Irish will tog out at Irishtown Stadium to compete in Athletics Ireland's showpiece outdoor Track & Field event in 2006. The short programme will give the governing body some clues as to who to select for the Europa Cup which fast approaches (17th June).

The competition is also being used by Crusaders to relaunch the previously annual GV Ryan and Louis Vandendries team competitions. While the former glory of these events will be hard to emulate first time it is hoped that a mens and a womens team will be crowned champions for the first time in over 5 years.

What chances do Crusaders have to name themselves victors? Well it being so early in the season (and with no ECCC aspirations this year) the Senior teams are in some disarray. Chief technical director Simon Kenny hopes to find enough time to plaster himself with the red & white and storm the 800m. Newly appointed Chairperson of the AAI Finance committee, Mary Coghlan will most likely compete over 200m. Otherwise the teams remain a mystery. Many are currently stateside and the injury list is long. Some however are unaccounted for, coming back from injury, just incommunicado (Stephen Flemming, Lorcan Carpenter...) and with the ever growing roster of juniors, who knows, The Cru COULD sweep the titles.

May Time Trial

Monday's time trial over 1 mile on the track showcased
some of the new talent emerging from the group of Mini
Marathon trainees. Leading the charge in the first
race was Grainne O'Driscoll who clocked an impressive
7.27, overtaking the early leader Aisling who finished
2nd in 7.34. Mary Donnelly was next in 8.03 closely
followed by Aileen (8.09), Susan (8.11) and Deirdre
(8.49). Great performances all round and a credit to
coaches Nadya and Sinead.
In the 2nd race Shane blazed a trail from the gun
(actually, Nadya's shiny new 3 Euro whistle..) to
finish in 5.15. Bill ran steadily to come in at 6.00
on the button. Bea who hasn't been running in 2 years
made her comeback in a great time of 7.32, all the
more impressive seeing as she chatted for most of the
first lap ! Mary O'C ran a P.B. of 8.01, Hilary was
next in 8.42, followed by Anne Marie in 9.01 and
Rachel in 9.12.
Thanks to Nadya for helping out with the timing.
Next time trial will be over 3000m on Monday 12th
June. Everyone welcome, spread the word.
