Crusaders at National Indoors

There were 3 appearances by Crusaders athletes at the national senior indoor championships in the Odyssey Arena in Belfast over the weekend.

Slavin Disdarevic narrowly won the 60m hurdles from Tom Carey of City of Derry to win his first Irish National medal and maintain his unbeaten run on Irish soil.

Antoinnne Burke competed in the 400m in which he claimed the bronze medal. Brian Murphy of UCC beat him into 4th place in the race (3rd Irishman).

Steven Flemming seemed to have a torrid time hitting the board in his campaign for silverware. He registered only one legal jump of 6m53, well below the new personal best he set just 2 weeks ago.

GOOD LUCK TO MARY

Good luck to Mary Coghlan, a longtime member of the club, who is a candidate for the Chair of the Finance & Risk Committee in the new look Athletics Association of Ireland.

Mary, who's a sprinter with sub-60 second 400m time to her credit, is an actuary by trade. A few years ago, she very bravely took a break from work to go to Oxford where she studied for a degree in mathematical sciences.

Her first big test is a meeting with the Dublin Athletics Board next Monday.

Weekend's Indoor Results

Thomas Chamney opened his indoor at his Collegiate Teams home meet, The Meyo Invitational. The Notre Dame team faired well at this meeting and our own man ran a personal best time in the 800m to finish 2nd to Peter Etoot. Thomas is coming off a fantastic breakthrough year in
2005 where the highlight was most defeintely his 5th place finish at the European Under 23 Championships. He managed to consistently break 1.50 last season and has begun 2006 in a fashion simmilar to if not mush improved to last. His 1.48.62 takes 10 hundreths off his personal
but rememeber this, it is his opening race. The next few weeks auger well for the young Crusader.

Ian McDonald is also away stateside training with clubmate and vastly experienced Olympian Peter Coghlan. The 110m hurdles looks set to be a big event for Crusaders this year as new recruit from Slovakia Slaven produced a solid opening race of 8.34.

Turlough Conway prepared for the hill race at Maulin (where he finished a great 5th) with a good time of 10.29, with Eoin McDonald, another new member, third in 10.34. GOOD RUN BY COGHLAN IN RAHENY

On a great day at the 22nd Axa Raheny 5, Garrett Coghlan was among the early leaders and although he struggled in the final mile, held on to finish 11th in creditable time
of 25.30. Behind him came the ever improving Rob Cross 28.07, Don Ryan 30.35 (M40), Emma Sokell 31.50, Aoife Joyce 35.06, Geraldine O'Shea 41.45, Emma McAuley 43.9, Maureen McGinley 43.54 (W40), Sinead Roche 44.0, Eileen Hassett 46.0, Sean Kearns (M75!) 47.0 and Tania Banotti 48.25.

Great runs by all - what a pity the race clashed with the mountain run at Maulin (there's another clash coming with the Ballycotton 10) or we'd have had a much larger crowd in action. In all, a stunning 1,500 turned out in Raheny, firmly established as the best spring road race on the calendar. Well done to all our friends in Raheny Shamrocks for their magnificent organisation; a model for
other races.
